What is Dental Veneer?

Dental veneering is the process of covering the tooth surface, which is applied when it is realized that the tooth cannot be saved due to a large decay in the patient's tooth. There are many different types of veneers used in the dental veneering process. The most suitable type of veneer for the patient is detected and applied.

Dental veneering types are named according to the materials used. Depending on the development of technology and chemistry knowledge from the past to the present, different materials in terms of durability and aesthetics have been used. The oldest materials used are gold-containing alloys. Veneers of gold-containing alloys have a very long past, but the aesthetic features of these veneers are very limited. Ceramics are preferred for new materials. Ceramics are very advantageous materials, especially in terms of replicating the tooth color. Apart from this, ceramics are also classified within themselves. In the past, metal was used as a hardening material underneath ceramics. These ceramic veneers with metal substructure are also not used today as they are limited aesthetically. Mostly, zirconium and full ceramic veneers are used. Zirconium and full ceramic veneers are currently the most technological materials in terms of aesthetics and durability.

How Are Dental Veneers Applied?

In the first step, the teeth to be veneered are measured, accordingly, the veneering material is determined. Then, the teeth are cleaned, and molds are prepared to form the accurate shape of the veneer and placed on the tooth. The patient lives with the mold for a temporary period for the dentist to observe whether the teeth adapted to the mold or not. If a problem is encountered in this process, the mold is removed, and the necessary treatment is applied to solve the problem. As the last step, the teeth veneering procedure is carried out and the process gets completed.

Dental Veneer Types

Porcelain Veneer: The material used in this application is made of porcelain. The porcelain veneer, which is prepared in the patient's tooth color, is resistant to tooth fractures and is long-lasting. The porcelain veneer is one of the most preferred types of veneering due to aesthetic concerns.

Zirconium Veneer: This type of tooth veneering is the one that makes the tooth look the most similar to the original. This veneer, contrary to other veneers, does not cause hot and cold sensitivity or any problems in the gum tissues. Thanks to its natural and aesthetic appearance, it is one of the most preferred veneering types for the front teeth.

Empress (Full Porcelain) Veneer: This type of veneering can be applied after shaving the tooth at a certain amount. The patient's tooth color and an aesthetic appearance are achieved.
