FAT GRAFTING

What is Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting technique, also called fat injection and fat filling, has a wide application area in cosmetic surgery and is becoming more popular day by day. Fat is one of the best-tolerated fillers, so it is widely used. It is an effective filling material used for the regeneration of hands and face. The injected fat cells continue to live in their new place and act as fillers. If the injected fat cells die, the filling effect disappears.

For this reason, techniques and tools to be used in fat grafting are very important. Techniques that will cause the least damage to fat cells should be used in the process. The most fat-grafting-applied area is the face.

The amount of fat on the face decreases and sagging occurs due to aging. With the fat injection, the fat on the face increases, and a younger, fuller, more lively, and aesthetic appearance of the face is provided. Volume losses can also be seen in young people due to the soft tissue and bone structure of the face. In these cases, fat injection can be performed as an alternative to the prosthesis.

Application areas are as follows:

  • Face
  • Lips
  • Lower Jaw
  • Forehead
  • Hands
  • Scars
  • The Liposuction Site (to eliminate the deformities in the shape of the body seen after the procedure)

How is Fat Grafting Surgery Performed?

First, the patient's complaints and post-procedure expectations are evaluated. The patient is given detailed information about the procedure. If the patient is on aspirin or its derivatives, he is asked to stop taking them one week before the operation. However, the patient should not stop taking the medication without consulting his doctor.

The fat to be injected is usually taken from the abdomen, waist, or any suitable body area with special vacuum cannulae. After the fat taken is processed, it is injected into the face, lips, lines run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth, grooves underneath the eye, cheekbone area, or forehead area with special tipped instruments. This process can be applied alone or in combination with other operations.

It is performed under only local anesthesia in small areas and local anesthesia combined with sedation in larger areas. The process duration varies between 30 minutes and 1 hour depending on the condition of the areas to be applied.

The patient is discharged on the same day with the operation. Depending on the procedure, the patient can usually return to social life 1 or 2 days after the operation. In the postoperative period, edema is natural to be observed in the areas where fat is injected. Edema is more prominent, especially on the lips. This edema will disappear spontaneously within a few days and the final aesthetic shape will appear. The patient can start doing sports after a week, without getting very tired. If a significant amount of fat dissolves, fat injection can be made in that area around the 2nd month.
