Things You Need to Know About Implants

If you have a partial prosthesis or have only one or more missing teeth, dental implants promise you teeth that look, feel and function naturally as if they are original.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are titanium cylinders (screws) surgically inserted into the jawbone where there is a missing tooth beneath the gums. Once in place, they allow your dentist to mount the replacement tooth. Your new tooth will look and feel like your real tooth.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

The implants provide stable support for artificial teeth because they fuse with the jawbone. Prostheses and bridges mounted on implants do not slip in your mouth. This is especially beneficial when eating and talking. This secure compliance also helps individual crowns placed over implants feel more natural than traditional bridges or prostheses.

Who Can Have Dental Implants?

For some people, ordinary bridges and prostheses are not comfortable or even not possible due to sore spots and weak backs. In addition, ordinary bridges should be connected to the teeth on either side of the space caused by the missing tooth. One advantage of implants is that there is no need to prepare or grind connected teeth to keep your new replacement tooth in place.

To have an implant, you must have:

  • Healthy gums
  • Enough bone to support the implant (or to be a candidate for bone graft)
  • Excellent oral hygiene habits to ensure the long-term health of dental implants.
